Fluid Mechanics Laboratory
The large Fluid Mechanics Laboratory in Fitzpatrick Hall houses two subsonic wind tunnels and an open jet facility with an on-line data acquisition system. One wind tunnel is a general purpose test facility. The other is a subsonic tunnel with the capability of producing two parallel streams with temperature stratification; up to 40 kW of heat can be put in to produce temperature differences of up to 50 degrees Celsius. The open jet facility is an easy access facility which permits flow investigations at low Reynolds numbers. Data acquisition is accomplished by using Macintosh fx with A/D and D/A capability controlled LavView software. Velocity measurements are made using hot-wire anemometry. Laser light sheet and stroboscopic light sources are available for flow visualization.
