Glen Niebur named Chair of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Notre Dame

Glen Niebur

Glen Niebur, professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering, has been appointed Chair of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, effective June 1, 2023.

“Professor Niebur has been an integral part of our College of Engineering community for over 20 years, making notable contributions to our scholarship as well as governance,” said Patricia J. Culligan, Matthew H. McCloskey Dean of the College of Engineering.

“I am grateful that he has agreed to take on this important leadership role.”

Niebur joined the Notre Dame faculty in 2000. He helped found the Bioengineering Graduate Program, a very successful interdisciplinary Ph.D. program that includes faculty from across all five College of Engineering departments as well as the College of Science.

His own research focuses on tissue mechanics, with applications relevant to bone behavior, including advancing understanding of the interactions between bone mechanobiology and cancer.

Niebur is an elected member of the Academic Council, where he serves as the Chair of the Undergraduate Studies Committee, and he also has been an elected member of the Provost’s Advisory Council (PAC).

Niebur received both his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, where he conducted research in the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory. Before embarking on his Ph.D., he was on the research staff at the Mayo Clinic Biomechanics Laboratory in Rochester, Minnesota.
